The Montpelier Food Pantry

This month's food is
Cereal, cold, hot, instant.
As the rebuilding plans continue at Trinity, the Food Pantry is going to continue handing out food on a limited basis from the Fellowship Hall during our regular Food Pantry hours. They will be assembling recipe kits, a recipe and all the ingredients needed to make meals at home. The first one will be our chili kit.  To complete the kits they will need chili powder and tomatoes, either crushed or puree.  If you're able to donate those items in the next couple weeks, it would be really helpful. In addition, any financial contributions you're able to make would be very much appreciated.  Checks to: Just Basics, Inc, 137 Main St, Montpelier 05602  Food Pantry in memo line.
Thank you for all you do!

Ministry Team Sign-ups
It's that time of year when you are invited to consider which of the church's ministries you'd like to participate in! Maybe this is the year to do something new! Take a look at all the options on the bulletin board outside the parlor and sign up!
The time has come to gather BOXES for the sale! Not too small. Not too big. Not broken down. That and this: we are hoping for good weather - and we need to be ready for rain, just in case. Do you have a TENT we can borrow? One more 10 x 20 or two more 10 x 10's would do it! THANK YOU to all who have already signed up to help and to loan equipment. For all the details, pick up a flyer in the narthex!

Appeal for help:
Easter Seals need help making their Family Visiting Room more welcoming!  Items needed are a kid-sized table and chairs, a wide but not too tall bookcase, a side table and toys and games (for all ages) in good condition. If anyone has these items, that you might have been planning to donate to the Lawn Sale, I’d be glad to pre-purchase them and put the money in the Lawn Sale money box. Thanks very much for your help with this project. Judi Joy 279-3177

Back to School!
The Sunday School program is ready for the new year. Today is our first day of classes!  We have moved the classroom to the old resource room, with the nursery next door in Amy Pitton’s former office.  Come see the new space!

Nursery News!
The nursery has made the move from the basement up to the first floor in Amy Pitton’s former office.  Even if you do not have a little one coming to Bethany, stop in and say hello! We are looking for a good, comfortable and easy to-keep-clean chair for an adult to sit in while in the nursery (nothing too large).   If you have a chair to donate to the nursery, please let Amy Pitton, Patty Turley or Jennifer Weinert know!

Nursery Attendant Needed
We are looking for someone to manage the Church Nursery every Sunday from 9:45-11:30 am.  This is a year-round, paid position.  A  background check is required.  A seasoned parent, grandparent, or someone with childcare experience is preferred.  If you know someone who would be great for this job, pass this request along!  If interested, contact the church office at 223-2424 between 9 and noon on weekdays or speak to Jennifer Weinert.

2016 Crop Hunger Walk
The Central Vermont Crop Walk will be held this year on Sunday, September 25th at the Berlin Pond.  We need a recruiter from Bethany and some walkers.  There will be a meeting this Thursday, September 1st at 6:00PM at the Barre Congregational Church.  If you are interested in being part of the CROP Walk, but aren't able to make the meeting, call Judy Cookson at 479-9002 and she will deliver the materials.  The goal for this year's walk is $10,000.

Words of a Modern Day Prophet:
“...failure with clay was more complete and more spectacular than with other forms of art. You are subject to the elements... Any one of the old four - earth, air, fire, water - can betray you and melt, or burst, or shatter - months of work into dust and ashes and spitting steam. You need to be a precise scientist, and you need to know how to play with what chance will do to your lovingly constructed surfaces in the heat of the kiln.”

HI. A very little about us.

No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you'll find a welcoming spiritual home at Bethany Church, Montpelier. We are an Open and Affirming Congregation, we have publicly stated that GLBTQ people are welcome and affirm that they are fully a part of our life and leadership.

Join us for a Sunday's Worship Service (10:00am), get involved in one of the many Mission Projects we do, take part in a Bible Study, Lenten Study, or stop in for one of the many concerts, or events held at Bethany. On a Saturday near April first is our Talent Show, always fun, funny, or both. Select the Calendar to find out more about upcoming events.

Bethany Church, founded in 1808, has been a vital part of the Montpelier community for over 200 years. Our members are extremely active in pursuit of peace and justice on the local, regional and international levels.

You do not have to dance, some just like to.

We are an Open and Affirming Church,
people who are GLBT are invited to be a part of our full life and leadership.

Bethany Church is located at 115 Main Street in downtown Montpelier. It is the large stone church with the slate roof, on the corner of Main Street and School Street.

From interstate 89, get off at exit 8 and follow the signs to the Business District, turning left at the fourth signal. This will put you on Main Street. Proceed into town and go straight through the stoplight (there is just one in downtown Montpelier!). Bethany is the stone church on your right, about 100 yards past the stoplight.

There is metered parking on Main Street and School Street, and Bethany has a parking lot behind the church (entrances off School Street or Main Street) for persons attending events at Bethany.

We have a big Building

The purpose of our building is to provide a place for the spiritual growth and nurture of all people. It is where the congregation lives out their ministries and missions. It is where we have fun and touch God.

We have it as a legacy and responsibility. We want it filled, used to build up Montpelier.

We rent space as a way to fund it's care. But we also have a commitment to having it open for anyone. People come and sit and pray and walk the labirynth and use the toilet and ask for help and read books and attend 12 step meetings and practice the piano and meditate and find shelter from the storm. This commitment means we have installed a timed automatic door opener and have hired an evening lock-up person.

On the last Sunday of the month the Synagogue, Beth El,  uses our kitchen and fellowship hall to provide a community meal open to anyone. The churches do this during the week and they said, "We know you folks are busy on Sundays." On Thanks giving Day, the Youth Service Bureau uses this space to provide a community Thanksgiving meal to hundreds.

Interactive Chapel Is a beautiful space with a 13 path Labyrinth for walking, mandalas for meditating and for making, a prayer station especially for healing, and Zen Sand Gardens for exploring the spirit in creativity. Free and open to any and all.

And of course our own classes, groups, meetings, dinners, variety shows, worship, spiritual exploration groups, counseling, and work space.

Music speaks to the Soul and for the Soul

Art speaks in ways words can not and do not. It opens up ways to express our praise and thanks to a God that love us unconditionally, just as we are.  Music opens up windows and doors in our soul to God 's word of joy, hope, love and presence. Music enlivens our worship and our  lives.

Bethany Church has long been known for the quality and vitality of its music programs and with Music Director Arthur Zorn, Bethany's Adult choir lifts the rafters high.

The Bell Choir, gentle percussion from Doug Little, and soloists all add delight to the ministry of  music here at Bethany Church. Those who directly participate in the Music Ministry of Bethany form a close community that simply loves what they are doing.

Second Sunday Concerts On the Second Sunday of the month there is a special concert.  The music starts at 9:30 am and ends 9:55. It is a bit of beauty for the morning or before worship. The musicians vary as do the styles. Information is on the website.

We are also a venue for concerts.  Check for concert information in the Calender and on the Website..

Kids at Bethany

Education in the Spirit

We follow the way Jesus taught. We try to learn even as we teach. This journey never ends. Whether we want to learn more about God, the way of Jesus, or how to live a faithful life: we gather in community to teach and to learn. And that usually means laughter and often food. We grow close to each other and to God.

Sunday School is when we teach children about God and how to be disciples. Children start Sundays with their parents in worship. After a time in worship set aside for them, they go to a Sunday School room to engage in discussions, activities, crafts, and games as a way to learn. They also will do various mission projects over the course of a year.
If you would like to have your child be a part of this, come to worship about 15 minutes early (9:45) and mention to the Greeters that you would like to 'sign up'. You can also call (223-2424) or email Rev. Amy who does great work with great joy.

Adult Education happens as Bible Studies, workshops, Book discussions, and mission work. These happen periodically but are listed in the KIOSK! and newsletter. Or call the church. There is also a weekly discussion group that is held offsite at West View Meadows. This group will tackle theological books by Marcus Borg, Karen Armstrong, Joan Chittister, and Robyn Meyers. They meet Thursdays at 11:45. Call for more information call or email Rev. Amy.

Communication and Operation

Good News is communicated and supported at Bethany.

We are called as witnesses to the God we know and the way that Jesus shows. Thus communication is a foundation of your living faith. If we are not communicating our faith, we are not being faithful.

Operations are just as foundational. Every bit of our mission work and ministry happens on this foundation. The meetings, mailings, the committees, computers, mops, phones, electricity, accounting, policies and procedures, paper, soap, etc. are all tools we need and use to be the faith community we want to be. They are essential for the essential work we do.

The Bethany Dialogue is our newsletter. A link usually appears on the website. You can also sign up to have it emailed to you directly.

KIOSK! This is a weekly email with info about Sunday and the week ahead. It too can be linked from this website but it really is best if you sign up to get it direct.

Mark LeGrand is our Office coordinator and might be the first person you communicate with. He is also key to room rentals and the operation of Bethany. Phone is 223-2424 and email at Bethany Church

Pastoral Care and Worship

Pastoral Care and Worship

We like each other. We try and show that care in our prayers and visits. The minister like visiting with those in a Hospital or Nursing Home and anyone who would like a visit.

Our worship is a come as you are event with prayers, scripture, music, sermons, laughter, and care.

If you would like to join us for worship on Sundays, a prelude starts about 5 minutes before 10:00. Usually worship is done in 60-70 minutes. The first Sunday of the month is communion and  is always a bit unique and might take a bit more time. We understand that everyone is called to this table.

There are also special times of worship: Christmas, Easter, Evensong, weddings, and funerals happen at other times than Sunday morning. Sometimes Sunday morning worship is made special.

If you would like a visit with a minister, call the office at 223-2424. If you want to worship, just come on by Sunday morning. Children worship with us for a bit and then they can go to Sunday School.

Our Pastor

Amy was called to ministry here at Bethany in the summer of 2002.

Amy seems happiest when she is doing a lot, from reading (trashy romance, Jane Austin, NYT best sellers, and String Theory), decorating, talking, renovating, moving furniture, talking, sewing, knitting, beading, talking, and complaining about the laundry. When it comes to TV; Red Sox, and Big Bang Theory, are favorites.

You do not need to be a member of Bethany Church or any church to talk to Amy. She listens well and gives comfort and counsel as needed. To talk to her, call the church office 223-2424. Generally, Amy is in Tuesday through Friday.

Email works too, although Saturday and Sunday can be iffy for a fast response.

She is on Facebook.
